Entrepreneurship Education and Training: Design, Delivery and Effectiveness

The ICIER-IIMB 4th International Conference on “Entrepreneurship Education and Training: Design, Delivery and Effectiveness” was held at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore during 29-31 January 2015. This is the fourth academic conference organized by the International Consortium for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research (ICIER). The first ICIER conference was conducted at IIM Bangalore in 2011, the second was conducted at Moscow International Higher Business School (MIRBIS), Russia, in 2012, and the third was in 2013 at Instituto de Economia, Rio de Janerio, Brazil. Selected papers from 2011 ICIER conferences were published as an edited volume by Springer under the title Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: Perspectives from Emerging Economies. Another edited volume from ICIER 2013 conference was published by the same publisher under the title Entrepreneurship in BRICS: Policy and Research to Support Entrepreneurs.

Professor Mathew J. Manimala, Director, ICIER-IIMB International Conference, welcomed the gathering and Professor Devanath Tirupati, Dean-Academic, IIM Bangalore, delivered the Presidential address. The conference was inaugurated by Mr. Jorn Rohde, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany on 29th January 2015. In his inaugural address, Mr Rohde discussed the German system of vocational training and observed that “in any country, entrepreneurs need conducive legal, economic and social environment to lead their businesses to success and growth. He also highlighted the importance of education, experience, R&D, confidence of people, role of SMEs and labour participation in the development of the German economy.

Ms. Leena Pische Thomas, Regional Manager-European Business and Technology Centre (EBTC) introduced European Technology Experience Centre (ETEC) an Initiative of EBTC, which promotes sustained and real-time knowledge exchange between Europe and India to facilitate collaboration in technology, science, research, innovation and business. Prof. Stefano Colombo, Co-founder, ArtforEconomy, Italy, has given a talk on the new initiative of representing the economy through artistic creation. European Technology Experience Centre and ArtforEconomy were inaugurated by Professor Fabio Corno, Milano- Bicocca University, during the inaugural function. The vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. G. Sabarinathan, Chairperson-NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore. The inaugural function ended with the National Anthem.

The key note speakers were Prof. Fabio Corno, Milano-Bicocca University Italy, (Topic: Entrepreneurship Education and Training: The need for a New Paradigm); Prof. Piero Formica, International Professor of Knowledge Economics and Entrepreneurship, University of Tartu, Estonia (Topic: Creative Ignorance and its Role in Promoting Entrepreneurial Innovation and Learning); Prof. Sari Mattila, Visiting Professor, IIM Bangalore (Topic: Moving Minds and Matter: Creating Space for Entrepreneurial Capabilities in Learning and Education) Ms. Robyn Spens, UK Director at Professional Passport (Topic: Entrepreneurial Skills for the 21st Century:  Developing a Global Mind-set); Prof. Raghu Echempati, Director of Graduate Programs, Kettering University, USA (Topic: Building an Entrepreneurial Mind-Set among Students: The Role of Pedagogical Innovation in Engineering /General Educationand Prof. Jay Mitra, University of Essex, UK (Topic: Holistic Entrepreneurship Education: An Emerging Economy Perspective).

Prof. K. Kumar, Apeejay Surrendra Chair Professor of Family Business and Entrepreneurship, IIM Bangalore, chaired a panel discussion on Educating the Family Entrepreneur: Issues and Challenges. The panel members were Mr. N. Krishnan, CEO of Parampara Family Business Institute, Sapthagiri S. Boggaram, Director, Sarathi International Inc. and Nitesh Gupta, Director, Vinir Engineering Pvt Ltd.

Prof. G. Sabarinathan, Chairperson-NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore, chaired a panel discussion on Role of Incubators in Promoting Entrepreneurial Learning, in which the panelists were Prof. Rajagopal, Chairperson, Entrepreneurship Centre at IIITB, C. S. Murali, COO, Society for Industrial Development, IISc, Bangalore,    Nagaraja Prakasam, Mentor in Residence at NSRCEL and Active angel investor at Indian Angel Network,    Sunil Maheswari, Founder and CEO, Mango Technologies and  Hrishikesh Kulkarni, Founder and CEO, 1clickstreet.

The conference received more than 250 research papers. These were subjected to a rigorous review process, following which 92 papers were accepted for presentation. These papers were presented in 18 parallel sessions on 29th and 30thJanuary 2015. A summary of these papers was presented in a plenary session on the final day by Dr. Princy Thomas, Conference Administrator, ICIER-IIMB International Conference.


The valedictory function on 31st January 2015 started with the welcome speech of Professor Suresh Bhagavatulla, NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore, followed by the presidential address of Margie Worthington-Smith, Executive Director, Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, South Africa. Awards for the best papers and artistic works were presented by the Chief Guest and the Panel of Judges. The Valedictory Address was delivered by Mr. Sohan Roy, CEO, Aries Group of Companies and renowned film Director/ Producer. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. P.K. Thomas, Co-founder and Trustee, ICIER-India. The valedictory function ended with the National Anthem.

Art Competition & Exhibition

As part of the conference, ARTforEconomy and Fondazione Rivoli2  organized an International Art Competition and Exhibition related to the themes of “Business and Economy”.  There were more than 40 art works from India and Italy and two ( one from India and other from Italy) were selected as the best art works.
